Properties:

Cyclobenzaprine has tricyclic structure, relieves skeletal muscle spasm by central effect at brain stem without interfering with muscle function, It does not act at neuromuscular junction or directly on skeletal muscle.

Indications:

Flexaren is indicated for relief of muscle spasm associated with acute,painful musculoskeletal conditions.

Improvement is manifested by relief of muscle spasm and its associated signs and symptoms,namely, pain, tenderness,limitation of motion,and restriction inactivities of daily living. Flexaren is not effictive in the treatment of spasticity associated with central nervous system disease.

Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to the drug.
Concomitant use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors or within 14 days after their discontinuation.
Acute recovery phase of myocardial infarction and patients with arrhythmias ,heart block or conduction disturbances or congestive heart failure.
Hyperthyroidism.

Side Effects:

Flexaren may cause drowsiness dry mouth and dizziness. Less incidance it may cause fatigue,asthenia, nausea, constipation, dyspepsia, unpleasant taste.
blurred vision,headache, nervousness, and confusion.

Precautions:

Because of its atropine-like action, flexaren should be used with caution in patients with a history of urinary retention, angle-closure glaucoma, increased intraocular pressure,and patients taking anticholinergic medication
It may cause in elderly patient hallucinations and confusion.

Caution should be taken in pregnancy, nursing mothers and in pediatric patients below 15 years of age.

Drug Interactions:

Flexaren may enhance the effects of alcohol, barbiturated, and other CNS depressants.
It may block the antihypertensive action of guanethidine and similarly acting compounds.
It may enhance the seizure risk in patients taking tramadol.

Dosage:

The usual dosage is 10mg three time a day with range of 20 to 40mg a day in devided doses.
Use of flexaren for periods longer than two or three weeks is not recommended .
