Pharmacologic Category:



Tinidazole is a derivative of the Imidazole. It is active against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa involves trichomonas vaginalis, entamoeba histolytica and giardia lamblia.

It is almost completely absorbed by G.I, and it has an elimination half – life of 12 – 14 hours, it is excreted in urine and to lesser extend in feces.


<B>1) Prophylaxis:</B> prevention of anaerobic postoperative infections.
<B>2) Treatment of:</B>
1- Anaerobic infections.
2- Acute ulcerative gingivitis.
3- Non specific vaginitis.
4- Urogenital trichomoniasis in both male and female patients.
5- Giardiasis.
6- Intestinal amebiasis.
7- Amebic involvement of the liver
8- Infectious mononucleosis : Tinidazole is one of the drug that have been reported to produce some clinical improvement in this disease.
9- Peptic ulcer: the gram – negative Bacterium Helicobacter Pylori is involved in aetiology of Gastritis and Peptic ulcer. Tinidazole in combination with the
Omeprazole and Clarithromycin or Amoxycillin are the treatment recommended.


- Blood dyscrasia.
- Organic neurological disorders.
- Pregnancy and lactation.
- Hypersensitivity to the drug

Side Effects:

- It may occur nausea, anorexia, vomiting, and diarrhea.
- In rare cases other side effects may occur such as skin rash, headache, tiredness, furry tongue and dark urine.
- Drug may produce transient Leukopenia.


- Avoid drinking of alcohol during the treatment of tinigyn.
- If, during therapy, abnormal neurological signs develop, therapy should be stopped.


1- Prophylaxis of postoperative anaerobic infections.
<B>- Adults:</B> 2g as a single dose approximately 12 hours before surgery.

2 - Anaerobic infections:
<B> -Adults:</B> an initial dose of 2 g the first day followed by 1g daily given as a single dose or as 500 mg twice daily, for 5-6 days.

3- Acute ulcerative gingivitis:
<B> - Adults:</B> 2 g as a single dose.

4- Nonspecific vaginitis:
<B> - Adults:</B> 2 g as a single daily dose for two days.

5- Urogenital trichomonasis:
<B>-Adults:</B> 2 g as a single dose.
<B>-Children:</B> a single dose of 50 – 75 mg /kg of body weight, dose may be repeated once in some cases.

<B>-Adults:</B> a single dose of 2g.
<B>-Children:</B> a single dose of 50 –75 mg /kg of body weight.
- It may be necessary to repeat this dose once in some cases.

7- Intestinal Amebiasis:
<B>-Adults:</B> a single daily dose of 2gr for 2 to3 days, treatment may be continued up to 5 days.
<B>- Children:</B> a single daily dose of 50 to 60 mg/ kg of body weight for 3 days.

8- Amebic involvement of the liver:
<B>- Adults:</B> total dosage varies from 4.5 – 12g treatment should be initiated with 1.5– 2 g as a single daily dose for 3 days. treatment may be continued for up to a total of 6 days.
<B>-Children:</B> a single daily dose of 50- 60 mg/kg of body weight for

<B>Note:</B> tinigyn should be taken during or after a meal.
